Biographical Sketch of Dr. William Madison Lambert
December 16, 1858 – September 26, 1929
William Madison Lambert was born into the farming family of H. Milton and Martha Lambert at Monticello in Drew County, Arkansas on December 16, 1858. At the time of his birth, William had only one sibling, a brother Henry. Years later, in the 1880 U.S. Census, the family had grown to ten children. “After acquiring a common school education, William taught school a few years then entered the Pennsylvania Medical College at Philadelphia, where he graduated with honor in the class of 1880.” 1 “In 1885 he located in Sevier county, then removed to Little River county and opened an office at Wilton (Millkin), later establishing a drug store and was postmaster for three years. He came to Winthrop and opened a drug store in 1894, becoming a pioneer country doctor greatly beloved by the entire community for his untiring efforts in the community’s behalf.”3 He was to remain in Winthrop for the remainder of his life.
On the sixth of December, 1892 he and Allie Belle Dupree were married in Little River County. To this happy union nine children were born. It is said of Dr. Lambert he was a loving devoted husband and a noble father.
Dr. Lambert was a member of the Methodist church, taking an active interest in those forces and agencies which make higher standards of living, for the uplift of the individual and the benefit of the community at large.
“The Daily Arkansas Gazette in Little Rock reported on July 7, 1905 Dr. W. M. Lambert of De Queen was recently elected vice president of the Eclectic Medical University of Texas, located at Dallas. He will occupy the chair of professor of materia medica and therapeutics.”2
Dr. Lambert died at home on September 26, 1929 at the age of 70. “The esteem in which Dr. Lambert was held was openly manifested by the large crowd who attended the services. His remains were laid to rest at the Camp Ground cemetery beside the three children who had preceded to their heavenly home.”1
